Two Good Dharma Friends Discuss the Lotus Sutra by Dharmajim(Jim Wilson).

This is a must read for those who would intelligently discuss the Lotus Sutra and Nichiren's Buddhism with their Therevadan and Vajrayana (Esoteric Buddhist) friends.

Dear Mr. NG

You are funny. For the Mahayana friends we have to study all 80,000 teachings.

It is good sometimes to have humor in our lives.

Is not the Lotus Sutra Mahayana - one out of 80,000?

Well Nichiren will remind you, like in many of his writing, the key word here in the arguement is that The Buddha yet reveal the Truth , before he expound the Lotus Sutra.
In the “Expedient Means” chapter 2 of the Lotus Sutra states, “The World-Honored One has long expounded his doctrines and now must reveal the truth." and “Honestly discarding expedient means, [I will preach only the unsurpassed way].
Many Treasures Buddha likewise testified to its truth, and the Buddhas of the ten directions put forth their long broad tongues until they reached the Brahma heaven as a sign of testimony.

Hence Grand master T’ien-t’ai stated: “After the Thus Come One attained enlightenment, for forty years and more he did not reveal the truth. With the Lotus Sutra, he for the first time revealed the truth.” ( in his 'Profound Meaning of Lotus Sutra' )

That's why when Nichiren was exiled to the cold Sado island of Japan, when a native named Abutsu-bo there came to confront him, said that how dare you accused all the Japanese Buddhist masters of the past and present will fell into suffering , Nichiren clamly replied well it is because they did not follow the direct words of Master of Teaching Shakyamuni Buddha.
latter Abutsu-bo converted to Nichiren Buddhism and became one of the stong lay followers , one of his grandson also became a Nichiren priest in the latter age.
